Mission Statement: The Wichita Adult Literacy Council (WALC) empowers people to improve their individual literacy skills and promotes community awareness of literacy issues.
WALC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency that promotes literacy in Wichita Falls and surrounding communities. Our primary method of promoting literacy is through our volunteer literacy tutor program. Our tutors are trained to work one-on-one with individuals in the community wanting to improve their literacy skills. About half of our students are basic literacy students, meaning they grew up speaking English but need to improve their reading and writing skills. The other half of our students are not native English speakers, and they need to improve their spoken English as well as reading and writing.
We do not charge anything for the services we provide. We rely on grants, fundraisers, and donations to fund the organization and our programs. Our best source of new tutors and students is from referrals, so please contact the WALC office if you or someone you know would like to become a reading tutor or would benefit from our services.
