Jessica is using the help she received from her math and reading test preparation tutoring at WALC to pursue a nursing degree. “A few years ago, I came to WALC to get help on math and reading. I had finished high school, but I knew I was going to need more education. I want to become an RN, and I needed to pass the TSI tests: math, writing, and reading comprehension. Of all the tests, writing and reading comprehension opened the doors to take the college level courses. I studied and studied with my tutor for the essay exam. I passed the test with a 5, the highest score,” Jessica said. “I am now set up with my college classes and am on my way to reaching my educational goals.”

Claudia is a WALC student. She has a BA degree from Mexico, and came to the WALC to improve her fluency in English, so she can continue her education at Midwestern State University.
“I’m a hardworking woman who likes to fight for my dreams, and right now, my dream is to become a school counselor,” said Claudia. “I know that it’s difficult but I believe that I can do it. I have to learn the English language really well if I want to achieve it. Thanks WALC, for giving me the opportunity to learn. I’m so happy.”
Claudia’s tutor, Jan, says: “Claudia has taught me so much. I didn’t realize how much I took for granted. For me, perhaps the most satisfying aspect of tutoring is the enjoyment we both get from working together. Claudia and I have developed a meaningful friendship based on mutual respect; I love to see her learn and grow… It’s fun and rewarding, and I’ve found I receive much more than I give.”

My name is James Lu. I came from China nearly three years ago. I started coming to WALC because I wanted to learn to speak and understand English better. I am very lucky!
I met my tutor at WALC. I practice speaking English four times each week, and now I am enrolled at MSU.
