Tutors

Who can become a WALC tutor?
     Anyone! If you desire to help those with limited literacy skills in the areas of reading, math, life prep, English language proficiency and workforce skills, you can volunteer your time and talent. WALC provides training and support for all tutors.
 
Where and when do tutors and students meet?
     At any time, and at any public place, convenient for the tutor and student. Our tutors frequently meet at the WALC office, the WALC study room at the library, at a workplace, or a local coffee shop.
 
How much time do students meet with tutors?
    Approximately 2 to 3 hours a week. This depends on how the student is progressing and their personal goals.

Students

How do I become a WALC student?
     To become a student, reach out to us by phone or email to set up a time to come by our office. We require basic personal information and will work with you to make a plan to reach your goals. 
 
What areas do you provide tutoring?
     Our tutors work with students on learning English, conversing in English better, math, learning to read, GED prep, enrollment for college, financial literacy and work place skills (building a resume and learning basic technologies). 
 
How much time will I get with a tutor?
    Approximately 2 to 3 hours a week. This depends on progress and personal goals.
 

Volunteers

Can I volunteer without becoming a tutor?
     Yes! We need a variety of volunteers. Year-round we take volunteers to sort our book donations. We also need volunteers for our events, like the Book Fair fundraiser in the Spring.
 
How do I become a volunteer?
     Contact our office by phone or email, and we will get you set up!

Other 

Do you take donations?
     Yes! We accept book donations. These books are sorted, stored and then sold at our city-wide Book Fair at the MPEC in the Spring. It is our biggest fundraiser every year. 
*We do not take- Magazines, Dictionaries, Text Books, Encyclopedias, Reader's Digest Condensed and Cassettes.

 
Do you take any other donations?
     We also accept board games and jigsaw puzzles. We set up a section at the Book Fair for these items, and families love them!
