The Wichita Adult Literacy Council was established in 1982, with a Texas Education Agency Special Project Grant. This grant provided the opportunity to establish an entity to address the needs of adults with low literacy skills in a way that traditional adult educational programs could not. In 1983, the organization registered as a 501(c)3.
Since then, WALC has served thousands of adult individuals in need of basic literacy skills in Wichita Falls and the surrounding region, in a myriad of disciplines. Our number one job is to help people learn, in their area of need! WALC works to give people a sense of hope and to provide opportunities for individuals in our community to reach their life goals and better their life circumstances. Our services are free to our students. We rely on grants, fundraising events, and donations to fund the organization and our programs. Our best source of new tutors and students is from referrals, so please contact the WALC office if you or someone you know would like to become a tutor or would benefit from our services.
