The Wichita Adult Literacy Council was established in 1982, with a Texas Education Agency Special Project Grant. This grant provided the opportunity to establish an entity to address the needs of adults with low literacy skills in a way that traditional adult educational programs could not. In 1983, the organization registered as a 501(c)3.
Since then, WALC has served thousands of adult individuals in need of basic literacy skills in Wichita Falls and the surrounding region, in a myriad of disciplines. Our number one job is to help people learn, in their area of need! WALC works to give people a sense of hope and to provide opportunities for individuals in our community to reach their life goals and better their life circumstances.

One in four adults in the US functions at the lowest level of literacy. An adult’s inability to perform routine literacy-based tasks places them at a distinct disadvantage in our technology-based society and workplaces.
Research shows individuals who improve their literacy skills are able to obtain a job or advance in their job, achieve financial independence, manage the health needs of self and family, ensure their children succeed in school, exercise their rights as citizens, lead successful lives, model positive behavior for their families, and give back to the community. With our help, students have obtained their GED, learned English and how to converse, gained financial literacy skills, enrolled in college, obtained a U.S. Citizenship, received a job promotion, wrote a letter for the first time, and received a library card.
